The name's Gav, but some people know me as Wes. To give you the short story, there were a lot of Gavin Smiths registered with the agency I used to work for, so I went by my middle name for work purposes, and in the working world the middle name stuck.
Geography:
I was brought up in what I refer to as the 'Village of Twee'. A nowhere place on the outskirts of the Yorkshire Dales about five miles from the nearest town. I still visit occasionally, (occasions usually categorised under 'weddings' or 'funerals'), but I wouldn't want to live there. For one thing, I like to have a couple of hundred miles between me and the family, so I chose to live in Glasgow ten years ago. Glasgow has been very good to me for the most part, although my Very English Accent did bar me from promotion at a Very Scottish Bank, which I hold against them to this day. It's not easy being an English/French hybrid in Scotland at times, but the good things about living here totally outweigh the bad.
Education:
As a kid I was very academic. I went on to uni and became a big drop out because I ran out of money. And motivation. I did get a Diploma of Higher Education though, so it wasn't a complete waste of time. My studies then took a back seat for a few years, before starting a couple of degree courses (in Business and then in Law), but I decided that neither of these was what I wanted to pursue, so I'm now studying towards a degree in Social Sciences.
Work:
I've had a number of low level secretarial, clerical and admin jobs. Career lowlights include:
- Working for the bank in their filing centre, doing team leader work for minimum wage.
- Being fired from ParcelFarce for being off sick three days in one week. Shortly after being told I was no longer required I spelled out 'Fuck the Force' in biros in the main reception area.
- Call centre work for a large Glasgow football club.
- Typing 1s and 0s for a medical company.
- Working as a karaoke host in a God-awful pub.
I was finally rewarded four years ago with a fantastic job as a Programme Administrator at a university. I love the work (mainly student support), and the salary is fricking awesome.
Life:
I'm a drinker, a smoker, and I used to be a maniser (kinda like a womaniser, but, you see, I prefer the boys). I've already gone through my quarter-life crisis, so I can cross that off my list of 'Things To Do Before I'm 30' (which is approaching pretty bloody fast now). I'm settled with a boyfriend and two cats and various strange phobias including church clock towers and people on stilts. I was signed off as sane by my therapist a few years ago - a huge achievement for me - and the focus since then has been on having as normal a life as possible. I'm now battling hypothyroidism which I totally blame for my weight problem, but other than that I'm fairly happy.
I'd like to think of myself as pretty intelligent, but reading through my journal makes me think that actually I'm decidedly average. I'm pretty good on grammar and spelling when I want (or need) to be, but I'm also damned lazy. Pretty good at those Mensa puzzles though - as a kid I scored well into the genius levels. I dread to think what I'd score nowadays. Too much daytime TV as a student has turned my brain to jelly.
Oh, and if you hadn't guessed already, I can be quite random.
Music:
I have LastFM so people can mock my taste in music.
Friending Policy:
I'll add practically anyone to my friends list. I'm pretty anal about checking my userinfo so if you add me I'll probably add you back, even if we have nothing in common.
